Electrical Motor Repair Co. (EMR) repairs, rewinds and rebuilds elevator motors for contractors across the country from its shop in Trenton, New Jersey. The work covers AC and DC hoist motors, armatures, field and brake coils, MG sets, gearless traction machines, escalator gear boxes and hydraulic pump motors, from fractional horsepower up to 800 horsepower.

Machines that cannot leave the building are handled on site. EMR’s field crew performs gearless armature rewinding, sheave regrooving and shaft machining in the machine room, which avoids the cost of rigging a machine out of a building.

EMR also stocks rebuilt hoist motors, MG sets, armatures and field coils ready to ship, manufactures the MOD Flexible Coupler, and is an authorized Imperial Electric distributor for new MG sets, DC hoist motors and hydraulic motors.

Frequently Asked Questions About Elevator Motor Repair

Do you only work on elevator motors, or other equipment too?

Elevator motors are our specialty, but the same winding room and machine shop handle industrial AC and DC motors, pumps, blowers and escalator gear boxes. We work with manufacturers and municipal maintenance departments as well as elevator contractors.

Can you repair a motor without removing it from the machine room?

In many cases, yes. Our field crew performs gearless armature rewinding, sheave regrooving and re-profiling, shaft repair and bearing surface machining on site. Field service avoids the cost and scheduling of rigging a machine out of a building, which is often the largest single line item on a machine room job.

How do I know whether to repair, rewind or replace an elevator motor?

It depends on the condition of the winding insulation, the commutator, the bearings and the shaft, and on whether replacement parts still exist for that machine. Our Motor Analysis Testing and Health program measures what the motor is actually doing so the decision is based on test data rather than a guess. Call with the nameplate information and we will walk through it with you.

Is EMR independently owned?

Yes. Electrical Motor Repair Co. is privately owned and operated from a single shop in Trenton, New Jersey. Estimating, winding, machining and scheduling all happen in the same building, and the decisions about your job are made by the people doing the work rather than by a corporate parent in another state.

What do you need from me to quote a job?

The motor nameplate is the fastest starting point. Manufacturer, horsepower, voltage, RPM and frame or model number tell us most of what we need. Photographs of the machine and a description of the symptom help, and if the equipment is old enough that the nameplate is gone, call anyway and we will work from measurements.

Where are you located and how far do you travel?

Our shop is at 809 East State Street in Trenton, New Jersey. We serve elevator contractors throughout the New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania corridor directly, and we ship rebuilt equipment and dispatch field crews nationwide.
